Automated master data exchange with the GDSN

Whether a company publishes its own product data in the GDSN network, receives data on other products or both at the same time: the interface between the PIM and firstbase ensures that the systems update each other, the data models are synchronized and up-to-date product data can be reliably found on both sides – automatically, error-free and without any manual intervention.

Sending and receiving product master data between the PIM and firstbase is done in three simple steps directly in the PIM system:

A simple process for data providers and recipients

The already high demands on master data management in industry and trade are constantly increasing. Companies must ensure that their product information is compatible with international standards and that they can exchange this information with their trading partners worldwide. The global standardization organization GS1 has developed the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) together with trade and industry.

For the exchange of master data via GDSN, GS1 Switzerland offers firstbase, a platform that is based on the global GS1 standards but specifically serves the needs of the Swiss market. Companies can transfer and maintain data to the platform via a web interface or Excel import. With a Product Information Management (PIM) system, we can automate this process and reduce the need for manual resources.

Once configured, data can be exchanged automatically: We connect the PIM system to firstbase via an interface, enabling direct synchronization of information between the two systems. The interface not only takes care of authentication and access control, but also controls the mapping and transformation of data between the customer’s data model and firstbase. As a result, companies receive a fully maintained master data pool directly in the central PIM, which is always 100% synchronized with the data in the GDSN. And thus process reliability and massive efficiency gains.

Requirements

Many companies in the consumer goods, retail and healthcare sectors rely on the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) and use the firstbase platform from GS1 Switzerland to maintain and exchange valid master data worldwide. In many cases, however, data is maintained either via copy & paste in the web interface or via an Excel interface.

To minimize the potential for errors and reduce manual work, firstbase can be connected to the Product Information Management (PIM) system via an interface. This system then keeps all of the company’s product information structured and maintained. The interface fully automates the mapping, transformation and comparison of data with GDSN.

In a digitalized economy, precise and standardized data is the key to success. The combination of PIM and firstbase creates a reliable, future-proof solution for the automated exchange of master data - with maximum process reliability.

Solution

Product Information Management (PIM/PXM)

Product Information Management (PIM) systems are advanced software solutions that centrally consolidate, manage and optimize product information from all your sources as a single point of truth. They enable companies to efficiently organize, refine and publish all types of product data, from technical specifications to marketing content, to all channels.

Product Experience Management (PXM), on the other hand, goes one step further and focuses on creating impressive product experiences for your customers. It also includes the ideal channel- and context-related presentation of products to optimize the individual buying experience.
